Food Safety, Agriculture and Regulatory Cooperation in the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

August 2016

Food Safety, Agriculture and Regulatory Cooperation in the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, released by War on Want and European and Canadian allies, outlines the regulatory differences between Canada and the EU that could jeopardise European food safety and production standards. European farmers, who have been struggling as farm prices crash, will also have to compete with Canadian agribusiness imports, resulting in a profound threat to jobs.

The New Colonialism: Britain's scramble for Africa's energy and mineral resources

July 2016

The report reveals the degree to which British companies now control Africa’s key mineral resources, notably gold, platinum, diamonds, copper, oil, gas and coal. It documents how 101 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) — most of them British — have mining operations in 37 sub-Saharan African countries. They collectively control over $1 trillion worth of Africa’s most valuable resources. The UK government has used its power and influence to ensure that British mining companies have access to Africa’s raw materials.

CETA: the toxic EU-Canada trade deal

May 2016

EU-Canada deal CETA (Comprehensive Trade and Economic Agreement) is one of a series of secretly negotiated 'new generation' trade deals which undermine democracy and destroy basic rights. This briefing from War on Want explains how CETA's 'corporate court' ISDS mechanism will enable North American corporations to sue EU governments for policy decisions affecting big business profits, lead to the locked-in privatisation of public services, and give big business the power to destroy new regulations before they see the light of day.

Up Front: Democracy under attack

April 2016

Today, our right to protest is under attack. UK civil society groups have seen their voices stifled by new legislation such as the 'gagging law', and crackdowns on the right to take collective action. In this edition of Upfront read about the UK government's assault on our democratic rights and how the crackdown on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is intensifying.  Read too about some the successes War on Want has achieved with the use of collective action for a more socially just and equal world.

Mercenaries Unleashed: The brave new world of private military and security companies

February 2016

Private military and security companies (PMSCs) burst onto the scene 15 years ago, following the declaration of a ‘war on terror’ and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

This vast private industry, now worth hundreds of billions of dollars, is dominated by UK companies reaping enormous profits from exploiting war, instability and conflict around the world.

The time has come to ban PMSCs from operating in conflict zones and end the privatisation of war.

The Zombie ISDS

February 2016

The investor-state dispute settlement system (ISDS) allows foreign companies to sue governments in their own privileged judicial system for any changes in public policy that affect their profits. The people of Europe overwhelmingly rejected ISDS when consulted by the European Commission.

The EC responded with a revised proposal promising to replace the ‘old’ ISDS system, with a ‘new’ and independent system: the Investment Court System or ICS.

Rough Trade: The threat of TTIP to small businesses in the UK

January 2016

The controversial EU-US trade deal TTIP seeks to grant US corporations greater access to the markets of Europe without complying with EU social and environmental standards.

This report reveals how such unfair competition will result in the loss of thousands of small businesses across Europe, and at least 680,000 jobs.

It also charts the rising opposition to TTIP within the business community, including the launch of Business Against TTIP.
