World Social Forum 2009
27 January - 1 February 2009

War on Want and thousands of activists will travel to Belem, Brazil for the annual World Social Forum, the world’s largest gathering of social movements and civil society groups.

A central theme of World Social Forum 2009 will be the global financial crisis. With millions forecast to join the 1.4 billion people already living in extreme poverty, it is clear that we must work together to rebuild the system. At WSF 2009 War on Want will join up with its partner organisations from the global South and other social movements from across the world to work together to create a global system based on public benefit, not private profit. We will also take a lead role in strengthening the opposition to Israel’s occupation of Palestine, resisting unfair EU trade deals and exposing the role of UK mining companies in human rights abuses around the world.

WSF 2009 kicks off on 27 January. Check this space in the coming weeks for more details, or visit the WSF 2009 website.

6 Billion Ways – Diversity, solidarity and action to make another world possible
28 February 2009

Every day seems to bring a new crisis: financial markets in turmoil, energy price rises, food riots, violent conflicts and environmental disasters. And whatever the disaster, poor and marginalised people are always affected the most.

The world doesn't have to be this way. Every person on the planet can make change happen. 6 Billion Ways is a day of ideas, discussion, creativity and action to explore the causes and solutions to these interlinked global crises. Come along to be inspired and make connections with others who want to challenge injustice.

With speakers, films, music and a chance to learn and practise new skills, 6 Billion Ways is your chance to get inspired and join local and global networks building a better world.

6 Billion Ways is organised by City Circle, Friends of the Earth, War on Want, Jubilee Debt Campaign, People and Planet, the World Development Movement and Rich Mix.

War on Want Comedy Gig 2009 – Stand up against corporate power
5 March 2009

Earlier this year, War on Want hosted its very first Comedy Gig, a night of explosive stand up, brand new sketches and hilarious songs performed by some of the UK’s top acts. We say a big thank you to Bill Bailey, Lee Mack, Armstrong & Miller, Oram & Meeten, Shazia Mirza, Josh Howie and Jack Whitehall for making the evening a huge success – and to the hundreds of War on Want supporters who attended the event, helping us raise thousands of pounds for our work fighting global poverty.

Following up on the success of last year’s event, War on Want is proud to announce its return to the Shepherds Bush Empire for Comedy Gig 2009. Tickets go on sale next month, but in the meantime put it in your diaries – this is an event you won’t want to miss!
