Tax evasion cost the UK economy £73.4bn in 2013-14, and is likely to grow beyond £100bn by 2018-19 if the UK government does not take action. Reducing tax avoidance, evasion and debt could significantly increase government income and undermine the argument that there is no alternative to austerity.

The trade union PCS have demonstrated that each tax officer on a salary of £30k brings in £958,000 of tax revenue each year. Despite this, staff numbers in HMRC have decreased from 92,000 in 2005 to 56,000 in 2015, with the threat of further jobs to be lost. Write to the Chancellor, George Osborne and demand:

  • an immediate stop to job cuts in HMRC
  • that UK tax rules don't encourage multinational companies to avoid tax in developing countries
  • that tax havens ae closed down
