Priti Patel’s Israel visit undermines attempts to hold Israel to account for international law violations

3 November 2017 - 1:00pm
Press release

In the week that marks a century since the Balfour Declaration, it has come to light that International Development Secretary Priti Patel has held undisclosed meetings in Israel, without informing the Foreign Office or British diplomats. Reports state that she was accompanied in these meetings by an influential pro-Israeli lobbyist.

Responding to news, War on Want’s senior militarism and security campaigner, Ryvka Barnard, said:

"Whatever the break down in government communications regarding her trip, Priti Patel’s visit is yet another example of the UK Government’s complicity in Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights. As long as the UK continues to act as a diplomatic friend and ally to the State of Israel, it is undermining any attempts to hold Israel to account for its illegal occupation and continued brutal oppression of the Palestinians.

Instead of courting Israel’s leaders, British politicians should be refusing trade negotiations, ending the sale of arms and using diplomatic pressure for Israel to abide by international law. Anything less leaves us on the wrong side of history, propping up an apartheid state, allowed to violate human rights with impunity."

Ryvka is available for interviews and further comment on request.
