This event will mark the 2nd anniversary of the murder of internationally recognised Colombian human rights defender Daniel Abril at the hands of hired killers. Daniel was a tireless defender of the land rights of local communities in Casanare in the face of rapid oil exploration in the region, and received death threats prior to his assassination.

The event will comprise the launch of the documentary "Casanare: Petroleo y Terror", which includes details of Daniel's work and the plight of communities that he sought to assist, followed by an interactive panel session to explore the struggles of frontline communities affected by Big Oil in finding justice, the link between multinational oil exploration and ecological disaster, and litigation and the courts as a mechanism to secure justice.

In the context of a peace process which has promised to bring about an end to the 50-year-old conflict in Colombia, the spike in killings and targeting of social leaders and the ongoing consolidation of multinational companies around the country, are a stark reminder that the issues which led to the conflict in the first place are far from being resolved.
