Malmström attempts to reboot TTIP in visit to USA

25 April 2017 - 4:30pm
Press release

European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, is in the USA meeting with US trade officials, only days after the US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross indicated the Trump administration would be open to reviving trade talks.

War on Want senior trade campaigner Mark Dearn said:

“We have repeatedly heard the European Commission tell us that values lie at the heart of its trade deals – an attempt to reboot TTIP with Donald Trump’s USA shows those values include misogyny, racism and an utter disregard for the millions of human lives threatened by climate change.

“TTIP was opposed with vigour across Europe while Barack Obama was in office, and the people of Europe will not accept an even more extreme Donald Trump version of this hated secret deal.

“European politicians are finally coming to realise that a modern trade deal with the USA means big banks being let off the leash, chlorine-washed meat on our plates and the privatisation of public services like the NHS.”

“We don’t need TTIP, we need trade justice.”
