£3 an hour UK garment workers reveals 'ugly face of the fashion industry'

23 January 2017 - 9:45am
Press release

Responding to news that textile firms in the UK are paying workers £3 per hour, War on Want's labour rights campaigner, Owen Espley, said:

"These allegations reveal the ugly face of the fashion industry: the fashion industry's race to the bottom seeks out cheap labour wherever it can find it. With weak regulation and enforcement, and restrictions on trade unions' ability to defend workers, fast fashion's race to produce the latest trend drives down conditions in pursuit of ever greater profit.

"The fashion brands have it within their power to transform this industry: and with that power comes the responsibility to act: where abuse is found in their supply chain they must be held to account."

Channel 4’s Dispatches has revealed that River Island, New Look, Boohoo and Missguided used factories paying workers between £3 and £3.50 an hour.
