Colombia ceasefire: ‘Ordinary Colombians must not be left behind’

23 June 2016 - 6:00pm
Press release

Responding to news that Colombia’s government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have declared a ceasefire and end to all hostilities, Seb Munoz, War on Want's Senior International Programmes Officer (Latin America), said:

"The announcement of a ceasefire and end to all hostilities is an historic moment, but ordinary Colombians must not be left behind.

"A post-conflict Colombia on the terms of the state is not enough, Colombians want peace with social and environment justice at its heart.

"The survivors of violence and human rights abuses, who have long been at the forefront of the struggle for peace and justice, know only too well that the prospect of peace in Colombia does not rest solely on a deal done between the rebel groups and the state. Many more people have a stake.

"For too long, the vast majority of Colombians have been side-lined in peace negotiations. It is why millions of Colombians recently took to the streets in peaceful protest and forced President Santos to agree to negotiate with civil society groups."
