European Commission forced into ‘humiliating climbdown’ on CETA

5 July 2016 - 4:00pm
Press release

Responding to news that the European Commission has scrapped plans to deny national parliaments a vote on the EU-Canada trade deal CETA, John Hilary, Executive Director at War on Want, said:

"Public pressure has forced the European Commission into a humiliating climbdown as they have been prevented from denying a democratic vote on whether to accept the toxic EU-Canada trade deal, CETA.

"Under CETA, public services will be subject to locked-in privatisation and big business can sue our government for decisions that affects its profits.

"This is a small victory for democracy in confronting the authoritarian European Commission that continues to put the interests of big business first and sell the rest of us down the river.

"The good news is that the EU-Canada deal will now have to be approved by each of the European Union’s 28 member states, yet the Commission has proposed that terms of CETA should apply provisionally, even before ratification by national parliaments. This shows how important it is that CETA is voted down at the European Parliament when the vote comes up at the end of this year."
