War on Want slams government report on human rights and democracy

21 April 2016 - 4:00pm
Press release

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office today published ‘Human Rights and Democracy Report 2015’.

In response, Ryvka Barnard, Senior Campaigner on Militarism and Security at War on Want, said:

“Year after year, the UK government uses the Human Rights and Democracy report to express concern over Israeli human rights abuses of Palestinians, while at the same time deepening its already close relationship with the Israeli government.

“For too long, government action has failed to match the rhetoric in these reports. While complaining about expanding settlements, the UK government continues to allow British companies to operate in them.

“The UK government states in the report that it is ‘concerned by the Israeli government’s violation of international human rights and humanitarian law’. Yet it continues to trade in arms with Israel, violating the UK’s own criteria for regulating the arms trade.

“This year Israel intensified its military occupation and Apartheid policies, and has widely threatened and intimidated Palestinian human rights defenders, including BDS activists. The UK government has responded by deepening its trade relations with Israel. Moreover, the UK government has now publicly condemned and clamped down on actions designed to hold Israel to account and bring it in line with international law.

“Where the UK government fails to act, ordinary citizens step up by campaigning for boycott, divestment and sanctions. It’s time for the UK to live up to its obligations under international law and to stop supporting Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights.”
