Colombian human rights defender visits UK to tell BP to pay up and demand #OilJustice

In the days leading up to the protest at British Petroleum's annual general meeting in Manchester on 21 May, War on Want and the Oil Justice Project will be hosting a visit from Fabián Laverde Doncel, a Colombian human rights defender and legal advisor for victims of state and corporate crimes.

McStrike to spread nationwide on 1 May

  • Workers on strike at five McDonald’s stores on 1 May after strike ballot returned with over 95 percent support for industrial action.
  • UK McDonald’s workers went on strike for the first time ever last September. This time, workers in Crayford and Cambridge will be joined by colleagues from three new stores in Manchester and Watford, hometown of McDonald’s Global CEO Steve Easterbrook.
  • Over 90,000 #McStrike tweets were sent in the week before and after the first McStrike.
  • In January, McDonalds responded to September’s strike with largest pay increase for a decade.

Francia Marquez awarded Goldman Environmental Prize

  • Over a quarter of questions asked at the AGM were about the bank’s complicity in human rights violations against Palestinians. Several referenced the bank’s criminal complicity in other abuses

HSBC is a major shareholder in companies which supply weapons and military equipment to Israel, which uses extensive and often lethal military against Palestinians, including the recent killing of unarmed protesters in the Gaza Strip.
 
Over 18,000 people around the UK have contacted HSBC Group Chief Executive John Flint, expressing their concerns on this issue, and HSBC branches in over 20 locations across the UK have been the focus of regular protests and pickets.
