Trans-Pacific Partnership: An Attack on Democracy

4 February 2016 - 1:45pm
Press release

The 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement was signed today in New Zealand – against a backdrop of protests on the streets of Auckland.

The TPP is a deal between the USA and East Asian countries, similar to other ‘new generation’ trade deals including TTIP (the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) and CETA (the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement). It encompasses around 40% of the global economy and has been negotiated in secret for seven years.

While the deal was signed today it is yet to be ratified.

War on Want trade campaigner Mark Dearn said: “The TPP, much like other trade deals negotiated in secret, is a deal by and for big business. It is also a key part of US policy to counter the rise of China.

“Contrary to big business and government spin, the TPP is bad news for the peoples of all the countries involved – it is an outright attack on democracy, human rights, public services, health and the environment.

“The TPP also seeks to prevent Southern countries using tariffs to protect and grow their industries, repeating a pattern which has led to the impoverishment of Southern peoples and the enrichment of big business and elites.

“We stand with people across the TPP countries opposing this deal.”
