Precarious contracts lie at the root of Asos's appalling treatment of workers

A new report says Asos warehouse staff are unable to take toilet breaks and are being fired for having panic attacks.

Responding to news of appalling work practices faced by warehouse workers at online fashion retailer Asos, War on Want’s labour rights campaigner, Owen Espley, said:

“Asos has a serious case to answer when it treats workers in this way. Precarious contracts lie at the root of this abuse, with bosses holding all the power workers are too afraid to challenge appalling treatment for fear of losing their job. Only through allowing workers their own voice in a trade union at work can this exploitation be stopped.

"It’s time to end precarious contracts.”

The precarious nature of work and its consequences has been on the rise since the mid-1970s, corresponding with a weakening of trade unions, deregulation and free market economics. Today, more and more workers find themselves on precarious contracts, unable to plan their lives or support their families as their hours and schedules are unpredictable.
