Beware: Trump believes in deregulation, privatisation and profits before people

22 November 2016 - 4:15pm
Press release

Responding to news that President-elect Donald Trump says the US will quit the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal on his first day in the White House, Vicki Hird, Campaigns and Policy Director, War on Want, said:

"The TPP is one of the new generation of toxic trade deals, like TTIP and CETA, crafted by and for corporate interests and all about removing social protections. It is why people around the world are strongly opposed to them.

"Trump has an agenda that appears to oppose such trade deals but in reality he believes in deregulation, privatisation, and putting corporate profit before people. It is no surprise that stocks in some of the most destructive corporations in the world have soared following Trump's election. As soon as he is in power Trump will be pushing for bilateral deals which are corporate friendly and which will harm the poorest.

"We demand a truly radical, internationalist approach to trade that will allow us to safeguard human rights, and tackle climate change and inequality."
