Time for a New Deal

As part of its ongoing work on the informal economy, War on Want is proud to present Time for a New Deal: Social dialogue and the informal economy in Zambia.

This report assesses the current state of social dialogue in the informal economy in Zambia. We believe that with the growing informalisation of labour and the changing nature of work in the context of globalisation, new forms of social dialogue and collective bargaining need to be developed that can incorporate new types of workers such as street traders and market vendors.

Zambia is a case in point. With the overwhelming majority of Zambia's labour force working in the informal economy, there is a need for these workers to have a voice in national affairs, just like formal workers have through trade unions in collective bargaining fora.
