'Back of the queue is the best place' for Trump’s trade deal

16 January 2017 - 12:00pm
Press release

Responding to Donald Trump’s talk of a post-Brexit trade deal, War on Want’s senior trade campaigner, Mark Dearn, said:

"The US is already the UK’s largest export partner and second-largest import partner, without a trade deal.  It’s increasingly clear that the back of the queue is the best place to be when it comes a US-UK trade deal led by the administrations of Theresa May and Donald Trump.  Any such deal would be geared toward stripping ordinary people of their power and handing it to corporations and elites.

"As under EU-US trade deal TTIP, a US-UK deal would go far beyond the removal of tariffs. The NHS would be offered up to US corporations, as Donald Trump is fundamentally opposed to public healthcare and the UK government is equally loathe to maintain public services. We also know that the US and UK favour a wholly secret ISDS ‘corporate court’ system without any recourse to appeals, while the current UK government’s desire for deregulating and unleashing the big banks and financial services would likely be welcomed by the Trump administration.

"Far from being ‘good for both sides’ this deal would be a danger to democracy, public services, workers’ rights, food safety and much else."
