The Times: ‘Exploited’ workers, hotels and online shopping funded by aid

War on Want in The Times. A recent report by nine charities including RIAO-RDC, a Congolese NGO, and the western charities Grain and War on Want, levels a string of criticisms against Feronia, including allegations of land grabs, low pay and exploitation, writes Billy Kenber.

Saranel Benjamin, international programmes director at War on Want, said:

“The government has a serious case to answer when UK taxpayers’ money ends up in the coffers of a palm oil company linked to land grabs and labour violations.  

"It’s a scandal that DFID and CDC continue to turn a blind eye to the operations of Feronia and have consistently failed to offer an explanation for the claims made by local communities. The lack of oversight and due diligence is shocking, particularly when DFID is now seeking to funnel more public money through its private equity arm.”

Comment: Supreme Court must find for worker's rights in gig economy case

Speaking ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the ‘Pimlico Plumbers’ Gig Economy Case, Owen Espley Labour Rights campaigner at War on Want said:

“The supreme court case must confirm what many courts have already decided, that claiming these workers were self-employed is a ploy to dodge taxes and deny worker’s rights, such as holiday and sick pay.
