Trade Union Act: ‘An attack on workers’ rights’

20 May 2016 - 10:15am
Press release

On 4 May 1926, the General Strike saw almost 1.75 million workers take to the streets across the UK.  On the same day 90 years later, the Trade Union Bill received Royal Assent: it is now the Trade Union Act.

Despite concessions being been won from the government, the Act appeared in the Queen’s speech on May 18.

Jackie Simpkins, Trades Unions Officer at War on Want, said:

“Trade unions have protected ordinary workers against poor conditions, low pay and unfair dismissal for generations. The Act remains a fundamental attack on workers’ rights, the ability of trade unions to organise and the right to take strike action.

“Proposals from the unions to increase ballot turnout through use of e-balloting have been all but rejected. The Act remains an employers’ charter, making it harder for workers to win a mandate for action, and easier for employers to overturn it."
