Israeli travel ban: ‘cementing its system of violence’

10 May 2016 - 11:30am
Press release

The Israeli government has officially refused to renew the travel document of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement co-founder Omar Barghouti.

The move amounts to a travel ban and is an escalation of its attacks on Palestinian human rights defenders who nonviolently advocate for Palestinian rights under international law.

Barghouti, who lives with his family in Acre, has Israeli permanent residency and requires an Israeli travel document to be able to travel in and out of Palestine/Israel. Israel’s decision not to grant a renewal of the travel document is being viewed by human rights experts as the first step towards revoking Barghouti’s permanent residency.

Barghouti, said: “I am unnerved but certainly undeterred by these threats. Nothing will stop me from struggling for my people’s freedom, justice and peace.”

Responding to the news, Ryvka Barnard, Senior Militarism and Security Campaigner at War on Want, said:

“This repressive treatment of Omar Barghouti and other Palestinian human rights defenders shows that Israel is cementing its system of violence and discrimination towards Palestinians.

“So long as the UK government maintains its diplomatic and military support for Israeli policies of aggression and occupation, it will be complicit in this violence against Palestinians.

“Israel’s oppression of Palestinians is systematic: it takes the form of lethal force used in the context of military occupation, preventing Palestinian freedom of movement, arbitrary arrest and detention without trial, and targeted harassment and attacks on those who dare to speak out against this oppression.

“It’s time for the UK to live up to its obligations under international law; stop supporting Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights, and act now to protect the rights of Omar Barghouti and all other Palestinian human rights defenders."
