Multinational, HanesBrands (HBI), sacks Honduran sweatshop workers
08 February 2012
Hundreds of sweatshops workers are now jobless following the closure of three USA HanesBrands (HBI) company factories. The majority of these workers are unskilled women whose families depend solely on their income. Many also suffer occupational diseases after working for several years for the company. The sudden news of the factory closures has left them with no hope to get compensation and no right to redress for their health issues.
The Honduran Women's Collective, CODEMUH, a War on Want partner who has long been fighting HBI to defend sweatshop workers' rights, had previously won the case to reincorporate women who were bullied and sacked by HBI as a result of work-related diseases. Now with the current closures these workers once again join the fate of thousands of unemployed people in Honduras.
CODEMUH mobilised their members to demonstrate demanding that the Honduran government investigates the case and the company reinstates the workers in other factories it owns which are still operating in the country. This is not the first time the company has been exposed by its workers as violating workers' rights.
War on Want supports the struggle of sweatshops workers together with CODEMUH!
