Agro-ecology and Food Sovereignty in Cuba

During the food sovereignty day organised by War on Want at the House of Commons on 18 October, Roberto Caballero, expert from the Cuban Association of Technicians on Agriculture and Forestry, explained how the agro-ecology model has been successfully applied in his country. He stressed that food can be produced everywhere by everybody. Agriculture free from chemicals, genetic modified seeds and more focused on small scale farming has been feeding Cubans, not only at village and district levels, but importantly at a national one.

Look at Roberto Caballero' s presentation below to find out more about the Cuban transition from an agriculture model based on chemical pesticides and fertilisers to an agro-ecologically and sustainable system. The latter is based on small scale family production, optimal and environmentally friendly use of local resources, protection of biodiversity, local markets (producer-consumer) and people’s participation at all levels of the food chain; in other words, based on the food sovereignty principles.
