Stop the Wall recognised for defence of human rights in Palestine

War on Want partner Stop the Wall today receives an award for its human rights work in a celebration marking Human Rights Day 2010. Stop the Wall was chosen by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to receive the award in recognition of its exceptional work defending the human rights of Palestinians whose lives have been devastated as a result of the construction of the illegal Separation Wall in the West Bank.

Jamal Juma’, coordinator of Stop the Wall, will be speaking at the event, taking place in Nablus, West Bank. With the slogan Speak Up, Stop Discrimination, the event aims to foster global awareness of human rights and will this year focus on the role of human rights defenders who act against discrimination.

The Stop the Wall Campaign, with which War on Want has worked for over five years, campaigns tirelessly to defend the rights of local communities throughout the West Bank who refuse to stand by and watch as land is confiscated, freedom of movement and access to basic services are denied and neighbourhoods and families are separated by the continuing construction of the Separation Wall. It organises demonstrations on the ground, pursues legal challenges in the courts and launches campaigns at international level.

As well as participating in Friday’s event Stop the Wall will feature in a special publication to commemorate Human Rights Day 2010. Due to be circulated widely, the publication will highlight the vital role that human rights defenders play in combating discrimination in Palestine as well as encouraging more people to participate in human rights activities.
