30 November 2011 - Solidarity gone global!

From early morning, War on Want visited picket lines in London, providing striking public sector workers with food and hot drinks. While some of us marched from Islington Town Hall, others were picked up by the PCS battle bus from the Unison picket line outside Camden Town Hall visiting several more picket lines with music, singing, whistles and general whoops of support. War on Want then marched shoulder to shoulder with an estimated 25,000 striking workers from Lincoln’s Inn Fields to the rally at Victoria Embankment

We knew that our partners had sent messages of solidarity to their fellow trades unionists in the UK, but we were overwhelmed by the National Garment Workers’ Federation (NGWF) in Bangladesh. They marched in Dhaka in solidarity with UK public sector workers fighting against the attacks being made on their pensions. This really is what global solidarity is all about.

Solidarity messages from War on Want partners

“The National Garment Workers' Federation (NGWF) has been fighting for the rights of garment workers in Bangladesh since 1984. We will stand with the public sector workers in the UK on 30 November in your fight against the attacks on your pensions and the cuts that your government have imposed. We know that the these abuses and the programme of cuts will make thousands of you poorer as a result and as workers, we stand united against poverty wherever it is found”

Amirul Haque Amin  - General Secretary, National Garment Workers’ Federation, Bangladesh

The Free Trades Zones & General Zones Employees union (FTZ&GSEU) extends its fullest support to the UK Trade Unions joint actions which is scheduled to be held on 30th November 2011 against the unilateral decision of the UK Government to make people more and work longer for a lot less

Yours in Solidarity
Anton Marcus
Joint Secretary
FTZ&GSEU, Sri Lanka
