The Robin Hood Tax - targetting the banks
16 February 2011
Ahead of the Europe-wide day of action for a Financial Transaction Tax on 17 February, War on Want took to the streets with other groups, calling for a Robin Hood Tax on currency transactions.
Amid the latest announcements of bonuses for bank bosses this week, the action presented letters to the CEOs of HSBC, Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland. Campaigners called for the government to 'Tax the Banks, Not the Poor', whilst handing out flyers to the public showing the real cost of inaction.
£7 billion - only a small amount of the potential levy that could be raised - could stop cuts to libraries, schools, higher education and other public services while the same amount could pay for free healthcare for 226 million people in poor countries.
See below for pictures from today's action - and look out for more to come.
