Recent statements by the US, UK and France point towards an escalation of western military force in Libya. War on Want believes such an escalation of violence will further destabilise the country and lead to more civilian deaths. We are calling for a halt to NATO led military intervention in Libya and for an immediate ceasefire to allow for a political resolution of the conflict.
War on Want strongly supports the uprisings for democracy across the Arab world but believes that western military intervention in Libya is a mistake because it risks killing Libyan civilians while doing nothing to end hostilities on the ground. It also raises the possibility of Western military occupation of all or part of Libya.
Similar occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown how disastrous such interventions are. Find out more in War on Want’s recent report The Great Game: The reality of Britain’s war in Afghanistan.
