The impact of the Honduran coup on women sweatshop workers

Latin America 2009 Conference - Saturday 5 December 2009, Congress House, London, 9.30am-5pm

Maria Luisa Regalado of the Honduran Women's Collective, or Codemuh, a long-term partner of War on Want, will be discussing the impact of the military coup in Honduras on the rights of women workers. As part of her talk, which will take place at the Latin America 2009 conference, Maria Luisa will describe her experience over the past months in the aftermath of the coup, and the pressure Codemuh has put on the coup's perpetrators to restore constitutional order.

Codemuh has been working on labour rights issues for 20 years. Since the June 2009 coup in Honduras and the removal of the democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya, Codemuh has taken a leading role in opposing the coup, exposing the effects of the current crisis on civil liberties and labour rights.

Latin America 2009 is being organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and is supported by War on Want. Visit the conference website for more information on Latin America 2009, including Maria Luisa's talk.

Codemuh's website (in Spanish) has more details on their work, as does the overseas work section of this website.
