G20 Counter Conference - Taking Alternatives Forward

7 November 2009 | 10.00-17.30 | Central Hall Westminster

Making the links between the economy, decent work, the environment and the global fight against poverty. Setting an agenda for the future.

In March, tens of thousands of people rallied to demand the G20 Put People First. Far from putting people first, we've seen nothing but a tinkering around the margins followed by the return to business as usual.

On 7 November, as the G20 returns to the UK, the agenda on the table nurses an already failed economic model back to life, whilst looking to sew up an unjust international climate deal outside the UN process.

The Put People First G20 Counter Conference is one of two alternative G20 conferences being held simultaneously in London and St Andrews on 7 November to coincide with the G20 finance ministers' meeting on 7-8 November. The conference will take place at Westminster Central Hall, a fantastic venue right in the heart of London.

Speakers include:

  • Jon Cruddas MP
  • Diane Elson, University of Essex
  • Billy Hayes, CWU
  • John Hilary, War on Want
  • Tony Juniper, Princes Rainforests Projects
  • Neal Lawson, Compass
  • Larry Lohman, The Corner House
  • Caroline Lucas MEP
  • Poul Nyrup Rasmussen MEP
  • Andrew Simms, New Economics Foundation
  • Hilary Wainwright, Red Pepper

Following the counter conference there will be a book launch for two exciting new titles from the New Internationalist. People First Economics and The No-Nonsense Guide to Global Finance give an accessible introduction to the murky system of international finance and present leading writers' big ideas for what an alternative might look like.
