Migration has not undermined public services, it has strengthened them

Responding to news that EU nurse applicants has fallen by 96% since the Brexit vote, Owen Espley, War on Want's labour rights campaigner, said:

"Migration has not undermined public services, it has strengthened them.

"Public services have suffered years of cuts and privatisation. Outsourcing and private provision means services are broken up and costs cut. Staff are recruited from overseas, leaving other countries without the workers they have invested in through providing training and education.

"Migrant workers have long made an essential contribution to public services, such as the NHS and social care, where employers recruit migrants in order to keep services running. We must  stand with migrant workers."
