Government boycott ban: ‘an assault on local democracy’

13 February 2017 - 3:45pm
Press release

In response to the government’s new announcement that it plans to formalise the so-called ‘boycott ban’ (first announced last year),

Ryvka Barnard, War on Want’s Senior Militarism and Security Campaigner, said:

"This ongoing attack on local democracy is the latest in a sustained assault on our democratic rights and freedoms. It’s vital we protect the right of local councils to make divestment and procurement decisions based on ethical grounds, in relation to Palestinian human rights, arms trade, fossil fuels, and other issues of concern."

War on Want is supporting Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) in taking the UK government to court over its controversial new pension investment regulations, which attempt to block divestment on these issues.
