In March 2016, G4S bowed to public pressure and promised to end its involvement in the Israeli prison system in two years.

Ryvka Barnard, Senior Militarism and Security Campaigner at War on Want, said:

"G4S has made similar promises in the past, under the pressure of public scrutiny, but has failed to take action on them. War on Want is calling on G4S to end immediately its connection with Israel's abhorrent prison system."

"Whether it’s supporting Israeli oppression, stoking violence against asylum seekers in the UK or exploiting crises caused by wars, G4S has continued to rake in the profits with little regard for human rights."

"We've yet to see any evidence of these promises being kept as G4S continue to put their profits before the rights of Palestinians. Now is the time for G4S to walk the walk and uphold its legal and ethical responsibilities."

G4S provides equipment and services to Israeli prisons where over 7,000 Palestinian political prisoners are held in violation of international law, often held without charge or trial, and subject to torture. G4S also provides equipment to Israeli military checkpoints along the illegal Apartheid Wall.

The detention of Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territories in Israeli prisons contravenes the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibiting the relocation of prisoners from occupied territory to the occupying country.

The company announced plans to sell its Israeli operations in its 2015 end of the year results, along with UK Utility services, US Youth Justice services and UK children’s services. Its announcement follows similar moves by French multinationals Veolia and Orange, and Ireland’s biggest construction company CRH, all of which have ended their business in Israel in the past few months after campaign pressure.

Ryvka Barnard added:

"Campaigners have repeatedly exposed G4S abuses around the world, successfully organising student unions, universities, charities, United Nations agencies, and others to boycott and divest from G4S until it ends its complicity in Israeli violations of Palestinian rights.

"G4S’s recent announcement proves that campaigning works, yet we will continue to pressure G4S until it ends its involvement in abuse entirely."
