Free the Chinese Labour Activists Now!

21 December 2015 - 10:45am
Press release

War on Want today joined a global day of action calling for the release of labour rights activists in China.

Since early December Chinese labour activists in Guangdong province have been subject to a wave of arrests.

At least six activists have been detained by police following the latest government crackdown which threatens the fundamental rights of Chinese workers - including freedom of association, collective bargaining, and the right to strike.

Owen Espley, Economic Justice Campaigner at War on Want, said:

“This latest crackdown on the labour rights movement in China is another body blow for workers already forced to work excessively long hours in appalling conditions, for poverty pay.

"Meanwhile, UK high street retailers continue to profit from the suppression of labour rights activists and trade unions, which keeps wages low.

“It is time Disney Store and UK retailers with supply chains in China put the rights of workers first, and join the call for the immediate release of the detained Chinese activists.”
