Davos summit: One year on, Cameron has ‘spectacularly failed' on corporate tax dodging

21 January 2014 - 11:07am
Press release

On the opening day of the World Economic Forum in Davos, War on Want's tax justice campaigner Murray Worthy said:

"A year ago in Davos David Cameron famously declared that big business must 'wake up and smell the coffee' at the public outrage over corporate tax dodging and that he would 'look our people in the eye and say that when they work hard and pay their fair share of taxes we will make sure that others do so as well'.

"But he has spectacularly failed in his promise to make these companies pay; despite some tinkering around the edges of tax havens' secrecy at the G8 this summer, the rules haven't changed and the reality hasn't changed. The companies that exploit and abuse the world's tax rules are still able to pick if and when they pay tax, leaving the rest of us footing the bill.

"This week, Cameron will once again be sitting side by side with these ruthless corporate giants in Davos, making sure that he can look them in the eye and assure them that for all his talk last year, he won't be making them pay."
