Anti-corruption summit: Cameron ‘wrong man for the job’

10 May 2016 - 7:00pm
Press release

Speaking in the run up to Prime Minister David Cameron’s anti-corruption summit, Owen Espley, Senior Economic Justice Campaigner at War on Want, said:

"We can expect much talk but little action from this anti-corruption summit; David Cameron is the wrong man for the job.

"The message from the Panama Papers is clear: corruption is alive and kicking in the UK’s tax havens. The UK’s overseas territories and crown dependencies provide a hot bed for the dodgy affairs of big business and the super-rich, yet the man with the power to shut them down fails to act.

"Serious action on corruption won’t start with a prime minister who likes to appear to be tackling it but won’t face up to the fact that tax havens and corruption go hand in hand.

"The fact that the Panama Papers exposed his family’s links to offshore trusts, after he’d lobbied to protect trusts from an EU tax crackdown, speaks volumes.  If a leader of an African nation pushed for rules that would favour his family’s business, regardless of legality, it would be called corruption."
