Members' Day

War on Want’s Members’ Day (incorporating our AGM) is on for 21 June 2008. Meet our staff and Council of Management, hear about the great work you've helped us achieve over the past year and take part in debates on our future. Some of our partners will be on hand to discuss the important work your support allows them to do in their own communities. Do come and join us for this exciting and inspirational day.

Victory in South Africa!
In a major win for poor residents of Johannesburg and War on Want partner organisation Anti-Privatisation Forum, the Johannesburg High Court has ruled in favour of activists who sued against illegal water limits. The ruling supported residents who said that forcing them to install highly controversial pre-paid water meters is unconstitutional (they are illegal in the UK). The Court also found Johannesburg Water’s limits on water provision to be illegal, and ordered the company to provide residents with 50 litres of water per person per day. APF

Brown under fire from War on Want

War on Want has criticised Gordon Brown for involving corporations that have been widely attacked for deepening poverty and undermining human rights in his latest scheme to combat global poverty. The companies lining up alongside Brown include Anglo American, Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola, all three of which have been targeted by War on Want for contributing to poverty and abuse. Instead of pandering to big business, an effective regulatory framework must be brought in by government to stop these abuses.

60 years on – Free Palestine!

The national demonstration to mark the 60th anniversary of the ‘nakba’ is just days away. The nakba, or catastrophe, refers to the violent removal of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes that made the creation of the state of Israel possible. Six decades on, millions of Palestinians are living with human rights abuse and crushing poverty in refugee camps or under Israeli occupation, still calling for justice and an end to the Occupation. On 10 May War on Want will be joining the mass rally in central London. If you would like to march with War on Want, look for us at Cleopatra’s Needle on the Embankment at 1pm.

War on Want supporting farmers in the global food crisis

With the price of food rocketing around the world, millions of people are finding it harder and harder to feed themselves and their families. War on Want has long supported organisations that fight for the rights of small farmers to grow food for their local communities, making them more independent. To give our supporters a better understanding of how the food crisis is affecting small farmers, we interviewed Dr. Lionel Weerakoon from the Movement for National Land and Agrarian Reform in Sri Lanka. Read his story here.

Ways to help, large and small

War on Want relies on the generous support of our members to fund the full range of work we do, from campaigning in the UK to supporting partner organisations around the world. While responses to our appeals are critical, there’s more you can do to help fund War on Want than just sending us a cheque. Later this month we are auctioning off an autographed amplifier that we had signed at the most recent Q Awards, with all the proceeds going to fund our work.
