Commission on Business, Human Rights and the Environment - How it would work

The Commission would investigate human rights abuses and provide remedies for victims when UK companies are operating abroad. In essence the Commission would allow overseas victims of UK corporate abuse to seek justice through a non-judicial body and not have to rely on potentially costly and complex legal action. The Commission could also provide guidance on human rights to UK companies operating abroad and seek to work with other similar bodies around the world to work together, build capacity and share learning to enable victims of human rights abuse to seek remedies.

In summary the Commission would

  • Investigate allegations of human rights abuse and provide remedies for victims
  • Provide guidance to UK companies on human rights
  • Work together with similar bodies overseas to build capacity and learning

The UK parliament Joint Committee on Human Rights support War on Want’s criticisms of the government’s over reliance on voluntary initiatives to address human rights abuse by UK companies and has endorsed the idea of a Commission. War on Want will continue to work with our partners in the Corporate Responsibility Coalition (CORE) to lobby MPs and raise awareness of the need for a Commission
