Take action – stop supermarket bullying

Supermarkets: Off Their TrolleyAfter years of campaigning, government proposals for a supermarket watchdog to hold supermarkets to account for the way they treat their suppliers are about to be debated by MPs. Despite all this progress, the government’s proposals don’t go far enough. Only by giving the watchdog the power to fine can supermarkets be made to change.

Take action now and ask your MP to ensure the supermarket watchdog has the power to fine

Dear ____,

I'm sending you this message to ask you to give the proposed Groceries Code Adjudicator the powers it needs to tackle supermarkets bullying their suppliers.

As a War on Want supporter, I welcome recent progress made to set up a watchdog to stop supermarkets abusing their suppliers and help the people who pick, pack and grow our food get a fair deal.

However I am concerned that the government’s proposals for this supermarket watchdog lack the vital power to fine supermarkets that break the Groceries Code, from the outset.

War on Want knows from its own campaigning on supermarkets’ abuses that ‘naming and shaming’ or the threat of negative coverage is not enough to stop supermarkets squeezing their suppliers. In order to be effective, the Groceries Code Adjudicator needs the power to fine supermarkets from day one.

I firmly believe the proposed adjudicator must be able to bring meaningful sanctions to bear. As my MP, I urge you to write to Jo Swinson MP, Minister for Consumer Affairs calling for the Adjudicator to have the power to fine supermarkets from day one.

Please also support proposals for the watchdog to have the power to fine when the Bill is debated in Parliament.

I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely,
