Say no to a sweatshop Olympics

Playfair LogoWar on Want is working with trade unions and anti-sweatshop activists across the world as part of the Playfair 2012 campaign. We want to make sure that none of the sportswear or merchandising produced for the London Olympics is made using sweatshop labour.

Yet so far the companies, including massive multinationals like Nike, Adidas and Pentland (which makes Speedos), have been reluctant to stop using sweatshops or even to reveal their suppliers so independent checks can be made.

We need your help to put more pressure on them to take responsibility. Help us make sure the London Olympics isn’t built on the backs of sweatshop workers.

I do NOT want to to be contacted by War on Want

Dear Herbert Hainer (CEO Adidas), Mark Parker (CEO Nike), Andy Rubin (CEO Pentland)

I want to enjoy watching London 2012, knowing that no worker who helped deliver the Games has been denied their rights. However, from the information Adidas, Nike and Pentland have provided to the Playfair campaign to date, it's clear that much more needs to be done.

That’s why I am supporting War on Want and the Playfair 2012 campaign and I call on you to ensure that international labour standards are enforced throughout your supply chains. Specifically your company needs to commit to:

  • pay every worker involved in making your products a living wage,
  • stop forced overtime and eliminate the use of short-term contracts for workers,
  • take concrete steps to create a positive environment for trade union organising
  • and establish longer term commitments to suppliers.

I support the principles of the Olympics which seek to create “...respect for universal fundamental ethical principles”. (Olympic Charter, 2007) and I ask you to work with Playfair to ensure these principles are followed when you are making products for London 2012.

Yours sincerely,
