Call for an immediate withdrawal of UK troops from Afghanistan

Britain’s continued military involvement in Afghanistan has intensified insecurity in the region and led to civilian deaths and moves towards the privatisation of the Afghan economy for the benefit of multinational investors.

Write to William Hague, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, asking him for an immediate withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan.

Dear William Hague MP,

As a War on Want supporter I am writing to express my concerns about Britain’s continued military involvement in Afghanistan. As the NATO led occupation enters its 10th year, casualties have risen among Afghan civilians and NATO forces alike, making the last 12 months the bloodiest of the conflict to date.

The intensified militarisation of Afghanistan has led not to more security but to greater insecurity, both in Afghanistan itself and increasingly in neighbouring Pakistan as well. Coalition commanders are now openly voicing their doubts as to the future. As the situation in Afghanistan deteriorates, an urgent change of UK policy in the region is needed. I therefore urge you to

  1. Withdraw British troops from Afghanistan immediately, and support a political solution
  2. Cease aerial bombing and all uses of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in Afghanistan and Pakistan
  3. Cease all British involvement in the USA’s illegal detention and torture programme, and to guarantee all detainees in Afghanistan access to lawyers as well as full human rights.
  4. Introduce legally binding regulation for private military and security companies, in place of the present policy of voluntary codes of conduct
I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,
