Want to be part of a success story?
War on Want is 60 this year. That’s 60 years of making a real difference to the lives of ordinary people around the world. The victories we win together are made possible through the work of our partners and the magnificent support given by all our members, donors, affiliates and volunteers.
We hope that your region and branch will celebrate with us and affiliate. In doing so, you can be part of the success story that has delivered real results for real people. For example, did you know that:
- In 2005, War on Want won a change to UK government policy ensuring aid to developing countries can no longer be made conditional upon privatisation or trade liberalisation
- In 2006, War on Want’s partner the FTZGSEU trade union in Sri Lanka won the first ever agreement guaranteeing workers an increase in salary every year, annual leave and an end to persecution of trade union activity
- Last year in 2010, War on Want partner the National Garment Workers’ Federation secures a 65% rise in the minimum wage for more than three million Bangladeshi garment workers - their first in four years. Many of these workers will be working in sweatshops producing the clothes that we buy here in the UK.
What makes War on Want different? We actively seek to work with unions and we value our links with the international labour movement and see ourselves as part of it. Most UK union members are in unions affiliated to us. Many are active War on Want members in their own right. Trade unions are represented on our Council of Management, and we have collaborated successfully with many affiliates at national, regional or branch levels over recent years. We are committed to building on these successes and deepening the relationship in years to come. As an affiliate you can vote at our AGM and have a real say in our future.
Branches can affiliate for just £25 and regions for just £100 annually. Direct debit is the most cost-effective method of payment as it saves on administration costs, but there are other methods of payment. Although we punch above our weight, our funding is limited compared to larger NGOs, so every contribution is valued.
