Workers’ rights? Get outta here!
Ten Union leaders and activists were sacked at Volex (Thailand) Co. Ltd, after the President of the Union distributed a union circular, containing demands for basic workers’ rights.
Volex is a British company, supplying electrical, electronic and optical fibre cable assemblies worldwide to companies such as Black & Decker, Ericsson, Philips and Sony.
Part of Volex’s quality policy states: “We will achieve [our] aims through well-trained, empowered employees, led by a focused participatory management team…”
However, when the workers of Volex attempted to empower themselves by forming a union in April 2004, Volex were less than accommodating... Four months later, in July, Volex announced to the workers that the company would not pay their annual bonus (company practice for the past five years) due to general ‘loss of profits’. On the 9th August 2004, 4 union executives and members were dismissed, accused by management of delaying and slowing down production. From 9th August till to date, 10 union leaders and activists have been fired at Volex (Thailand) Co. Ltd.
“Workers were not replaced... Some of us had to handle a few machines to make up for the loss of workers. We obliged the company by working harder than before”
- Ms Rattana (Volex worker) The workers demand that Volex (Thailand):
