War on Want partners affected by the Tsunami

The Tsunami has wreaked havoc in South East Asia. The livelihoods of millions lie in tatters, and people are in urgent need of help.

War on Want has a number of partner organisations in the region. Your donation will go directly to help groups like the Free Trade Zone and General Employees Union (FTZ&GEU). The union has a proud history of successfully defending the rights of its members in the face of continued anti-union activity by factory management.

The union is a part of the Transnational Information Exchange TIE Asia, a long standing War on Want partner in the region. They told us this week that out of 700 employees at one of the factories where they operate, only 200 reported for work. This means the factory cannot operate and those able to work cannot get paid.

It is essential that much-needed workers’ rights organisations are able to continue their work in the region, with a view to the long-term development of a shattered region.

War on Want has always been about hand ups rather than handouts. Our philosophy is one of working together with people in developing countries to provide long-term sustainable solutions to the issues they face. Your donation will help us support our Asian partners in their efforts to provide long-term rehabilitation for those affected. . Tie-Asia’s immediate priority is to build fifty houses, consisting of two rooms, a kitchen and toilet to enable some of the garment workers to leave the refugee camps and begin to rebuild their lives. Each house will cost around £750 to construct.

War on Want is committed to assisting our partners with projects like these that will secure people’s livelihoods for the long term. But we need your help to do so. Please follow the link below and give what you can.
