War on Want Project Partner Loses Hand in Letter Bombing
Two trade unionists from Colombian War on Want partner, SINTRAEMCALI, were critically injured this week in a savage letter bomb attack.
At 5.30 PM on 7th June a large package arrived at the Water treatment plant where Carlos Gonzales and Gustavo Tacuma worked. Gonzales attempted to open the package upon which it exploded.
Gonzales was forced to have his arm amputated, and Tacuma is still in a critical condition in hospital.
The attack comes a week after staff at the EMCALI plant staged a protest at government plans for operational and staff restructuring. Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe imposed military control on the protest area, threatening protestors with force if demands weren’t dropped.
