UK premiere for Brazil poverty film

The film - Raimunda, the Quebradeira - takes its title from the name of the woman uniting opposition to big business.

Sixty-year-old Raimunda leads other quebraideiras, indigenous women, in the fight for land to support their families in their struggle against poverty.

They eke out a living in the Amazon forest, breaking and selling the leaves, shells and kernels of babaçu palm tree nuts which produce roofs, baskets, charcoal and soap.

But large-scale profiteers want to destroy the trees to make way for biofuels, mining and cattle.

War on Want supports the Movement of Women Babaçu Breakers which helps the 300,000 women resist this threat.

It has arranged the screening at 9pm in the Latin American Film Festival, which the anti-poverty charity sponsors.

The 52-minute documentary will follow the 18-minute short film Lola, about a young immigrant in New York.

They will be shown in the Renoir Cinema at 5 Brunswick Centre, near Russell Square, London, WC1N 1AF.
