Take Action: ensure supermarket power is checked

The Competition Commission will make its recommendations on supermarket supply chains in April. It’s time for campaigners to make a last push to ensure supermarket power is checked and that workers in supply chains around the world are taken into consideration.

war on want
To:

Dear Inquiry Secretary,

I am delighted that the Competition Commission is undertaking a new market investigation into supermarkets. As a consumer I want to be able to buy fresh, healthy food locally, and value the choice that independent shops provide.

I don’t want cheap food and products to be provided at the expense of farmers, workers’ rights or the environment.

Please take my view into account when you are looking at the impacts on consumers of growing supermarket dominance.

I would like you to take the following actions:

Block any new takeovers by Tesco or other major supermarkets.

Introduce a stronger and legally binding code of practice to ensure that all suppliers throughout the supply chain at home and overseas are treated fairly.

Recommend rules to hold supermarkets accountable for internationally recognised workers’ rights throughout their supply chains.

Yours sincerely,
