Take Action for Sacked Workers!

To:

President Alvaro Uribe,

I call upon your government to reinstate with full compensation the 60 workers dismissed from the EMCALI plant.

The grounds for dismissal are unjustified, as there was no interruption in the provision of services as the result of the actions of workers or union leaders between May 26 and May 29.

The dismissal orders issued on July 14th by the Managing Director of EMCALI, Carlos Alfonso Potes, constitute a violation of the Colombian government’s obligation to respect freedom of association and ILO Conventions 87 and 98.

I also call on you to:

Provide full guarantees for the life and protection of the senior SINTRAEMCALI union leaders who have received death threats in recent months.
To ensure a full investigation into the corruption cases concerning EMCALI management. Public Services International referred to the case against Carlos Alfonso Potes, the Managing Director of EMCALI, who has been retained in his position although the National Comptroller (Procuradaría General) has called for his removal from office on charges of embezzlement.
To fully implement without delay the May 2003 agreement signed by your government, the regional authorities and SINTRAEMCALI.
