Support flower workers this Valentine's Day

War on Want supports Colombian flower workers to fight for decent pay and conditions through our partner organisation Cactus. Women in particular face difficulties, frequently earning less than one dollar a day and enduring discriminatory and exploitative working conditions.

Support Flower Workers on 14 February
Workers’ best hope of demanding change is through organising strong independent unions. But many employers forbid workers from joining independent unions. And some employers have started hiring workers through agencies, giving employees even less leverage to demand improvements.

Therefore, in recognition of International Flower Workers Day, Cactus is asking supporters to send the email below to Colombia’s Minister of Social Protection at

Dear Sir,

I am writing in support of the Colombian flower workers represented by Cactus on International Flower Workers Day.

I ask that Colombian plantation owners commit themselves to:

  • Respecting the right of workers to freedom of association.
  • Refraining from hiring workers through intermediaries, and instead only hire workers directly.

Human rights do not represent a barrier to trade.

Sincerely,

International Flower Workers DayInternational Flower Workers Day
In the weeks leading to Valentine's Day, flower workers in developing countries work endless hours of overtime - sometimes forced and often unpaid. And so 14 February is also International Flower Workers Day, a day to stand in solidarity with these workers around the world.
