Stop UK companies and their suppliers abusing workers overseas

Write to Rt. Hon. John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, calling on the government to adopt legislation that will give workers overseas the right of redress in the UK, such as the ability to seek compensation for damage to their health and loss of earnings, as the result of actions of UK companies or their suppliers.

John Hutton war on want
To:

Dear Secretary of State

I am writing to bring to your attention to the recent War on Want report Growing Pains highlighting the unsafe working conditions of flower workers in the developing world. Workers on flower farms in countries such as Colombia and Kenya face hazardous conditions and little job security to provide for their families.

In November the UK government passed the new Companies Act (2006) which will require company directors to take into account the interests of employees, the need to promote their relationship with suppliers and the desirability to maintain high standards of business conduct which we welcome.

Unfortunately there still remains a huge gap in the regulation of companies which allows UK companies and their suppliers to abuse workers overseas without these people being able to seek redress in the UK. Rights of redress would include the right of workers overseas to take the company to court in the UK to recieve compensation for damage to their health and any loss of earnings.

As this report demonstrates we need the government to take action to prevent the irresponsible behaviour of UK companies and their suppliers operating around the world.

Therefore I call on you to support legislation that will stop UK companies and their suppliers abusing workers overseas and let them seek redress in the UK.

Yours faithfully
