Millions oppose war in Iraq
On 15 February, War on Want joined tens of millions in an unprecedented show of global solidarity, which saw six hundred towns and cities across the world stage public opposition against a planned war in Iraq.
In London, up to two million people lined the City’s streets before converging on Hyde Park, making it the largest political demonstration in British history.
In almost freezing conditions, War on Want joined the march early on Saturday with hundreds of supporters carrying banners and placards supporting a war on poverty – the only war worth fighting.
Steve Tibbett, head of campaigns at War on Want said: “It was a truly amazing day. People from all walks of life took to the streets to express their opposition to war. War on Want met thousands of people throughout the day that shared our belief that a war on poverty is the only effective and long-term solution to the threat of terror and the gaping inequality that traps so much of the world in a downward spiral.”

A succession of guest speakers in Hyde Park, from the Reverend Jesse Jackson to former MP Tony Benn, spoke of the need to look beyond the motives of countries such as Britain and the United States and focus our energies on building solidarity with people all over the world.
Commenting on the day’s momentous events, Louise Richards, chief executive of War on Want, said: “Never before has there been such a global display of opposition. The coming together of so many millions is proof in itself that both rich and poor can come together and fight for a common cause. Addressing poverty has never been more important because today’s War on Terror is a clear reminder that turning our backs on the poor will simply come back to haunt us.”
