Keeping up the pressure in 2006
Dear Members and Supporters I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and supporters a very Happy New Year. With your help, we continue to make a difference to the lives of those living in abject poverty around the world, but much remains to be done.
During 2006 we need to call to account the world’s richest nations, which once again failed to deliver on their promises to tackle global poverty in 2005. In its campaigning work War on Want will be focusing on corporate accountability and the ways in which multinational corporations now seek to control the international agenda in their own interests, usually to the detriment of the poor and vulnerable in society. In our international programmes work, we will continue to focus on issues such as food sovereignty, decent work, and the right to live in peace.
The Make Poverty History campaign went a long way towards raising awareness of the issues in 2005, but as we start another New Year the spirit behind it must continue, and it should not become just one more slogan consigned to the dustbin. War on Want will continue, as it has done for over fifty years, to campaign against the root causes of poverty and to work with our partners in the South to bring about justice and equality for the millions of people who live without hope.
To do this, we need your help more than ever. If you are already a member, thank you. If you are not a member, then please join us and spread the word about our work. And for trade union members, please make sure your branch/region/district is affiliated to War on Want!
The struggle continues!
