Conflict Zones

Introduction

Conflict Zones - Military in Colombia
Elcio Carriço

People in poverty face bitter difficulties in areas suffering from conflict. War on Want supports organisations that work in these conflict zones who can build capacity of vulnerable groups to defend their rights.

Political violence and conflict have many origins, but frequently go hand in hand with poverty and extreme levels of inequality. Almost every conflict zone in the world is located in a developing country.

Most of the victims of internal conflict are civilians, many of them women and children. They face a daily struggle to protect their lives and livelihoods amidst instability and violence.

Colombia serves as a sad example: the country has suffered great conflict for over forty years, causing the internal displacement of an estimated 3 million people. In Palestine, olive farmers and other vulnerable groups are threatened by the Separation Wall which cuts them off from their families and livelihoods.

The focus of our strategic approach is based on the understanding that all people affected by conflict should be supported to defend their rights and have access to the work that can help them survive in difficult circumstances.

We support organisations in conflict zones in Palestine, Colombia and Iraq.
